Registration in Thailand
Registering the marriage before a registrar at a district or khet office.
Authority: Department of Provincial Administration — district registrars

In Thailand a marriage takes effect on registration before a registrar under the Civil and Commercial Code. A marriage abroad takes effect under that state’s law, and to rely on it inside the Thai system you normally record the family status at a district office using certified, translated documents. The real difference is the document sequence and which offices you deal with.

Marrying under the foreign state’s law and then recording it in the Thai family-status register.
Authority: The foreign registry plus the Thai district registrar
| Criterion | Registration in Thailand | Marriage abroad, then family-status recording |
|---|---|---|
| When the marriage takes effect | On registration before the registrar under the Civil and Commercial Code. | Under the law of the state where the marriage took place. |
| Foreign party’s documents | Usually an affirmation of freedom to marry from their embassy, legalised and translated as the registrar requires. | Per that state’s rules, but the resulting certificate needs certification before use in Thailand. |
| Using it inside the Thai system | The Thai certificate is directly usable with Thai agencies. | Recording the family status first is usually needed before Thai agencies rely on it. |
| Using it abroad | Needs the certification layer (legalisation / apostille / embassy) the destination requires. | Usable in that state’s system; a third state may still require certification. |
| Common reason for refusal | An affirmation missing a certification layer, or a translation whose name spelling differs from civil registration. | Relying on a foreign certificate that has not been legalised or recorded in the Thai register. |
