💡 Quick Summary

What is Apostille?
An Apostille authenticates public documents under the 1961 Hague Convention. Thailand acceded on 30 June 2026, with entry into force on 28 February 2027. Until then, Thai documents continue through MFA and embassy legalisation as required by the destination. After entry into force, the document type and destination must still fall within the Convention.
What is Legalization?
Legalization (Consular Authentication) is the traditional document authentication system requiring multiple steps: 1) Notary Public certification; 2) Consular Affairs authentication; 3) Destination country embassy/consulate legalization. Valid for all countries worldwide, including non-Hague members. Advantage: works for all countries. Disadvantages: multiple steps, higher fees (price on request), slower (7-15 days), multiple offices.

If destination agency specifies Apostille or Legalization → follow their requirements. If unsure → initial case assessment with Thai Notary Law, we check requirements for every embassy and agency. Caution: some Hague countries' agencies may not be familiar with Apostille, especially recently joined ones. In such cases, both Apostille + Legalization may be needed for safety.
