Thai citizens need a visa before travelling to the United Kingdom. Tourism, family visits and short business trips use the Standard Visitor visa, which allows stays of up to six months per visit. Applicants complete the form on GOV.UK, pay the fee and attend a biometrics appointment at the UKVI-designated centre in Thailand. Officers assess whether the applicant is a genuine visitor with sufficient funds who will leave the UK at the end of the visit.

Why Thais cannot use an ETA and must apply for a visa
The UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is for non-visa nationals. Thailand is on the visa national list, so Thai passport holders cannot use an ETA in place of a visa and must hold a visa before boarding, unless they already have another form of UK permission.
Changing planes at a UK airport en route to a third country may require a Direct Airside Transit Visa or a Visitor in Transit visa, depending on the route and documents held. Travellers connecting through London should use the GOV.UK checker before booking.
UK visa policy changes, so always rely on the government's Check if you need a UK visa page rather than unofficial websites.
The test officers apply: a genuine visitor
Appendix Visitor of the Immigration Rules requires applicants to show they will leave at the end of the visit, will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits, will not work or study beyond what is permitted, and have enough money without recourse to public funds.
There is no fixed minimum balance. Officers weigh income, regular commitments and the cost of the trip. A high earner with heavy commitments may be questioned, while a moderate earner with a proportionate plan and clearly sourced funds often presents stronger evidence.
Ties to Thailand, such as stable employment, a business, family, property or studies, are central and should be shown in documents rather than only described in the form.
Documents to prepare for a Standard Visitor application
UKVI does not require a fixed list of every document, but the burden is on the applicant to meet the rules. Thai applicants commonly provide the following.
- Current passport and previous passports showing travel history
- English employment letter with position, salary, length of service and approved leave
- Bank statements showing normal income and spending, with a bank certificate
- Business owners: company registration, VAT registration, financial statements and business account records
- Invitation from family or friends in the UK, with a copy of their passport or proof of status
- House registration, marriage and children's birth certificates and any name change documents, with English translations
UKVI translation requirements
Documents not in English or Welsh need a full English translation in which the translator confirms it is an accurate translation of the original, with the date, the translator's full name and signature, and contact details for the translator or translation company, as set out in UKVI supporting document guidance.
Translations without the translator's confirmation, or covering only part of a document, may be disregarded. Translate every page that carries text, including stamps and annotations.
Family and settlement routes may need further authentication of civil status documents; check the guidance for that route specifically.
Two, five and ten-year visas: who they suit
Frequent visitors can apply for a Standard Visitor visa valid for 2, 5 or 10 years. Each stay is still limited to six months, and visits must not add up to living in the UK.
Long-validity applicants should have a history of compliant travel and a continuing reason to visit, such as children studying in the UK or ongoing business contacts. If the officer does not consider long validity appropriate, a shorter visa may be issued instead, so apply for long validity only when the travel history supports it.
When Standard Visitor is the wrong visa
Work, courses longer than six months, or joining a British or settled spouse require other routes such as Skilled Worker, Student or Family visas, each with specific criteria such as a licensed sponsor, English language level and sponsor income thresholds.
Applicants from Thailand coming for more than six months must include a tuberculosis test certificate from a UKVI-approved clinic in Thailand, so book the test well in advance.
Getting married in the UK requires a Marriage Visitor visa if the couple will return to Thailand afterwards; staying with the spouse requires a family visa. Choosing the wrong category can lead to refusal.
Refusal grounds and reapplying
UKVI refusal notices give reasons under the Immigration Rules. Visitor refusals generally carry no right of appeal, so the usual route is a fresh application with evidence addressing each reason. Resubmitting the same file usually produces the same result.
Previous refusals by any country must be declared truthfully. Failing to do so counts as deception and can lead to a ban on applications for several years.
- Large unexplained deposits before applying
- Trip costs disproportionate to income
- Form answers inconsistent with the employment or invitation letter
- Undeclared refusals or overstays elsewhere
From application form to decision
Applicants create an account and complete the form on GOV.UK, answering questions on employment, income, monthly expenses, ten years of travel history and family details. They then pay the fee and book an appointment at the centre in Thailand. Optional paid services offered by the centre do not affect the decision.
At the appointment, applicants give fingerprints and a photo and submit or upload documents as instructed. Standard processing times are published on GOV.UK and may lengthen in busy periods. Applicants with fixed dates should apply several weeks ahead; applications can be made up to three months before travel.
When the decision arrives, check the name, passport number, validity dates and visa type on the vignette at once. Report any error through the channel UKVI specifies before travelling.
Monthly expenses and income declared in the form should be calculated from real documents such as payslips and bank statements. Rough estimates that differ markedly from the evidence make officers doubt credibility.
Applicants whose employer or sponsor writes a letter should make sure the letter is on official letterhead, dated, signed and includes contact details that UKVI could use to verify it, since officers sometimes check employment directly.
Children and family groups
Children under 18 applying as visitors need evidence of the relationship with the accompanying adult and of care arrangements in the UK. Where a child travels with only one parent or with another adult, include a consent letter from the parent or parents not travelling, with copies of their passports or ID cards and an English translation of the birth certificate.
Families should make sure each member's application describes the same itinerary, accommodation and sponsor. Officers usually assess family applications together, so a mismatch in one form can affect the others.
If a parent in Thailand has sole custody, attach the court order or district office record showing custody, with a translation, instead of the other parent's consent.
Our role
We check consistency between your form answers and documents, translate Thai documents into English with a translator's confirmation meeting UKVI standards, provide true-copy or signature certification by a Notarial Services Attorney where a recipient requires it, and assemble the file for upload or the application centre.
Visa decisions are made solely by UK Visas and Immigration. We cannot promise outcomes and never prepare untrue documents.
