foreign police clearance legalization for thai elite visa: Thai Notary Law manages legalisation of foreign documents for use in Thailand — certified translation, Department of Consular Affairs (Chaeng Watthana) filing, Apostille and destination-embassy attestation.
We file at the Legalisation Division, Department of Consular Affairs (123 Chaeng Watthana Road, Bangkok) every working day. Our translators are recognised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and our team coordinates onward attestation at embassies in Bangkok — so a single engagement covers translation, MFA legalisation, Apostille and embassy stamping.
| Decision-maker | Legalisation Division, Department of Consular Affairs, MFA Thailand |
|---|---|
| Direction | Foreign document → used in Thailand |
| What is certified | The signature and seal of the issuing officer, and the conformity of the translation — not the truth of the content |
| Translation | Required; must match the source line-by-line including seals and reverse-side text |
| Apostille | Available for destinations that accept it; otherwise the legacy embassy chain applies |
| Official fee | Per document, at the rate published by the Department of Consular Affairs — verify on consular.go.th |
| Processing time | Varies by service track and workload — confirm at filing; excludes peak periods |
A foreign-issued document becomes usable in Thailand only after certification in its country of origin (an Apostille for convention states, otherwise that country's foreign ministry), followed by a Thai translation whose accuracy is certified by the Department of Consular Affairs. Skipping a link in that chain is the usual reason a Thai registrar or court refuses the document.

No provider can influence the ministry's queue or its decision. What an agency does is prepare a translation that meets the formatting rules the first time, which is what avoids the refile loop that costs most applicants their extra days.
Only if the destination is a party to the Apostille Convention and accepts it for your document type. For non-party destinations the legacy chain — MFA legalisation followed by that country's embassy attestation — is still required.
A copy is accepted only when the issuing authority itself certified it as a true copy. Self-made photocopies are refused at the counter.
The stamp itself does not expire, but many receiving authorities require the underlying civil registry extract to have been issued within the last 3–6 months. Check the receiving body's rule before filing.
Documents issued in Thailand still pass through the same division; an English-language original may still need a Thai translation or a certified transcription depending on the issuing office.
Information current as of 2026-07-28. Requirements differ between receiving authorities — always confirm with the body that will receive your documents.
