Thai citizens need a visa to enter India. For tourism, short business trips, medical treatment and conferences, most Thai travellers can apply for an Indian e-Visa entirely online through the Government of India's official portal and receive an electronic authorisation before departure. Purposes that the e-Visa does not cover, such as employment, long-term study, journalism or joining family for a long stay, require a regular visa applied for through the Indian visa application centre in Bangkok on behalf of the Embassy of India.

Do Thai Passport Holders Need a Visa for India?
Yes. Unlike many ASEAN neighbours, India does not offer visa-free entry to ordinary Thai passport holders. Every Thai traveller, including children, must hold a valid Indian visa or an approved e-Visa authorisation before boarding. Airlines check this at check-in, so arriving at Suvarnabhumi without approval usually means you cannot fly.
The relationship is not reciprocal: Thailand has granted visa exemption to Indian nationals for tourism, but that does not create any right for Thais entering India. Always plan around India's own rules, which are published by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Bureau of Immigration.
Rules, fees and eligible ports of entry can change. Before applying, check the official e-Visa portal and the Embassy of India in Bangkok for the latest conditions. Avoid unofficial websites that imitate the government portal and charge additional fees.
The Indian e-Visa: Types Available to Thais
- e-Tourist Visa: for sightseeing, visiting friends and relatives, short yoga programmes and similar short courses. Different validity options are offered, from a short double-entry visa to longer multiple-entry visas.
- e-Business Visa: for meetings, sales, establishing business contacts, attending technical meetings and similar activities. It does not permit employment in India.
- e-Medical Visa and e-Medical Attendant Visa: for treatment at a recognised hospital in India, with attendants applying in their own category.
- e-Conference Visa: for attending a conference organised by or approved by an Indian government body, with the required event clearance.
- Other e-Visa categories may be added or changed; the official portal lists the categories and conditions that apply on the day you apply.
How to Apply for the e-Visa Step by Step
Apply only through the official Indian Visa Online portal. Complete the form in English exactly as your details appear in your Thai passport, including the spelling of your name in the machine-readable zone. Mismatches between the form and the passport are a common reason for rejection or problems at immigration.
Upload a recent colour photograph with a plain light background, full face visible and no shadows, plus a scan of your passport's photo page. Business, medical and conference visas need additional documents such as an invitation letter, a hospital letter or event clearance. Pay the fee online and keep the application reference.
Apply well before travel, at least several working days ahead and earlier in peak season. When approved, you receive an Electronic Travel Authorisation by email. Print it and carry it with your passport. On arrival at a designated airport or seaport, immigration will record biometrics and stamp the visa.
When You Need a Regular Visa Instead
A regular (paper) visa is needed for purposes outside the e-Visa scheme, including employment visas for those who will work for an Indian entity, student visas for degree courses, research visas, journalist visas, missionary visas, and entry visas for family members of Indian nationals or persons of Indian origin. Those who want to enter through a land border or a port not designated for e-Visa holders also need a regular visa.
In Bangkok, regular visa applications are lodged through the Indian visa application centre operated by the Embassy's appointed service provider. Applicants complete the online form, book an appointment, submit their passport and supporting documents, and later collect the passport. Processing times depend on the visa type, and some categories require additional clearance in India.
Employment visas in particular require a contract with the Indian employer, evidence of qualifications and, in many cases, a minimum salary threshold. Plan ahead, because a refused application cannot simply be converted into a business e-Visa to start work.
Documents Thai Applicants Commonly Prepare
- Thai passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival, with at least two blank pages.
- Recent photograph meeting the portal's specifications.
- Return or onward ticket and accommodation details.
- For business: an invitation letter from the Indian company and a letter from your Thai employer or company affidavit.
- For medical treatment: a letter from the Indian hospital confirming the treatment.
- For regular visas: degree certificates, employment contracts, birth or marriage certificates, often with certified English translations.
Translating and Certifying Thai Documents for India
Indian authorities work in English. Thai-language documents such as a company affidavit, house registration, birth certificate, marriage certificate or academic transcripts should be accompanied by an accurate English translation. For visa applications, a professional translation certified by the translator is often sufficient, but employment, study and family-related applications may require more.
Where documents will be used formally in India, for example to register a company, obtain a residence permit or register a marriage, they may need legalisation. Until Thailand's accession to the Apostille Convention takes effect on 28 February 2027, this generally means certification at the Department of Consular Affairs of Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs followed by attestation at the Embassy of India. After that date, an apostille may replace the embassy step, subject to India's acceptance procedures.
Business travellers commonly need an English translation of the Thai company affidavit and a signed letter of support. We can prepare the translation and arrange notarial certification if your Indian counterpart requests it.
On Arrival and During Your Stay
e-Visa holders must enter through one of the airports or seaports designated for e-Visa arrivals; the list is published on the portal. After entry, they may generally leave through any authorised immigration check post.
Some regular visa categories, typically long-term employment, student and research visas, require registration with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within the period stated on the visa, usually through the online e-FRRO system. Keep copies of your registration certificate.
Certain areas of India, such as parts of the north-east and some border regions, require a separate Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit. Check whether your itinerary is affected before you go.
