Per the HCCH table, the United States (in force 15 Oct 1981), the United Kingdom (24 Jan 1965), Australia (16 Mar 1995), New Zealand (22 Nov 2001) and Canada (11 Jan 2024) are all Apostille parties. For visas, many authorities in these countries only want copies with English translations, without legalisation, while some courts, registrars and universities may require it. If legalisation is needed before 28 February 2027, file at the Department of Consular Affairs then the embassy; afterwards an apostille applies.

Legalise or just translate?
Always read the receiving authority's document list first. Visa authorities often ask for an English translation with translator details, while marriage registration, court cases, inheritance or property transfers often require legalised documents.
If unsure, ask the recipient in writing whether legalisation is required, to avoid unnecessary fees.
If legalisation is needed before 28 February 2027
1. Original document
A Thai government document, or one signed before a Notarial Services Attorney.
2. Translate into English
Some Canadian authorities may accept French; check with the recipient.
3. Department of Consular Affairs
Legalisation, THB 200 per legalisation stamp or THB 400 per legalisation stamp (same-day).
4. Destination embassy
Check whether the embassy still offers legalisation; some limit it. Follow the embassy's published instructions.
From 28 February 2027
All five will accept Thai apostilles instead of the Consular Affairs and embassy steps, absent objections. Translation may still be required.
