Domestic Amphoe Registration under Civil and Commercial Code Book V
Thailand-side weddings are solemnized inside the Kingdom at any local Amphoe (District Office). The registrar operates under Sections 1448–1460 of the Civil and Commercial Code, requires personal appearance of both spouses, two adult witnesses, valid identification (Thai national ID card for Thai nationals, unexpired passport for foreigners), and — for a foreign spouse — a Freedom-to-Marry affidavit issued by their home embassy in Bangkok within the past three months, translated to Thai by an MFA-listed translator and legalized by the Department of Consular Affairs on Chaeng Wattana Road (Bang Khen) before the file is accepted.
Same-sex couples became eligible on 23 January 2025 under the Marriage Equality Act B.E. 2567 (2024), which amended the terms "husband and wife" to "spouses" throughout Book V. Registration is genuinely walk-in same-day once documents are complete: affidavit translation and MFA legalization typically 2–3 business days, Amphoe registration 30–90 minutes at the counter. Statutory fees paid to the Amphoe are THB 20 for the marriage certificate (Kor Ror 3) and THB 10 for a certified copy; concierge handling — MFA-listed translator, courier to Chaeng Wattana, interpreter at the Amphoe, prenuptial-agreement drafting if required — is quoted per file.

Sinsod, Prenuptial Governance, and Amphoe-Level Practicalities Inside Thailand
A Thailand-side wedding at a district Amphoe is procedurally simple but legally consequential in ways that only surface long after Kor Ror 3 is issued. Section 1466 of the Civil and Commercial Code deems every prenuptial agreement void unless signed, witnessed, and lodged with the registrar before the marriage entry is created — a same-day walk-through where the couple decides at 11:00 to sign a prenup and register at 11:30 works legally, but any attempt to negotiate the prenup after Kor Ror 3 is stamped is void and unenforceable. Sinsod (dowry) is culturally central but legally invisible: the CCC does not require Sinsod to validate a marriage, and neither the Amphoe registrar nor the Kor Ror 3 certificate records its value. When foreign spouses ask whether an unpaid Sinsod voids the marriage, the answer is no — but the payment may be recorded in a private Sinsod contract enforceable under general contract law (CCC Sections 149-154) if the drafting is done correctly. We routinely draft Sinsod contracts that survive divorce proceedings and estate distribution, distinguishing gift portions (Sinsod-proper), engagement gifts (Khong Man under Sections 1437-1439), and continuing spousal support obligations.
The Amphoe registrar's discretion is more meaningful than most guides admit. Sections 1449-1454 CCC list absolute impediments (existing marriage, close-blood consanguinity, incapacity, minor age without permission), but registrars in high-volume Amphoes such as Bangrak, Vadhana, Chatuchak, Muang Chiang Mai, and Kathu (Phuket) increasingly demand additional documentary support: proof of prior-marriage termination (foreign divorce decrees legalised in Thailand), medical fitness for elderly registrants, or evidence of income sufficiency for foreign spouses. Post-registration ripple effects inside Thailand are largely tax, insurance, and property. The Revenue Department treats spouses as separable taxpayers by default (Revenue Code Section 57 Ter), but couples may elect joint filing which materially reduces effective tax for single-earner households. The Insurance Commission recognises spouse as automatic first-tier beneficiary under Life Insurance Act B.E. 2535 unless overridden. Most consequential: foreign spouses may not own land under the Land Code B.E. 2497 (Sections 86, 96 bis), so a Thai-spouse land purchase after marriage requires a Section 74 acknowledgment declaring the funds are Sin Suan Tua of the Thai spouse — mis-drafted acknowledgments retroactively invalidate the deed.
